The Quickstarter helps you step-by-step to publish your article through either the Gold or the Green Open Access route. For further guidance, see the accompanying explanation below.

Explanation to the Quickstarter

Before you submit your publication, please note that most Open Access journals are reliable and reputable, but also some predatory journals exist. Read more on predatory journals and how to recognize them in this document (PDF, 84 KB). Please, check the journal status in the WUR Journal Browser and when in doubt contact WUR Open Access Support.

During submission and at publication

Gold Open Access

Gold Open Access makes the final published version of your publication immediately freely and permanently accessible for everyone. This is done by the publisher immediately after publication. Generally, the author needs to pay an Article Processing Charge. WUR has reached agreements for more than 11,000 journals to publish Open Access at reduced or no cost.

If you publish Gold Open Access in a full Open Access or hybrid journal please be aware of the following:

• Use your WUR e-mail address in submission forms and mention your WUR affiliation in the publication by using the correct WUR brand name.
• Select the Open Access option during the submission process.
• Information on publisher workflows can be found here.
• You can often choose a Creative Commons licence for your Gold Open Access publications. Usually publishers provide a selection of CC-licences you can choose from. More information about CC-licences is available at the Copyright Information Point.
  

Green Open Access

Green Open Access offers alternatives to publish your initially closed publication Open Access. You can use Green Open Access if WUR has no agreement with the respective publisher or if your funder or research group doesn’t reimburse the costs for publishing Open Access. With Green Open Access you self-archive your publication in Research@WUR. You can self-archive via two routes:

(A) Final published version (Taverne amendment)

You can make the final published version of short scientific works openly available six months after the first publication online or in print. This is irrespective of the rights of publishers and/or co-authors.

• Please check the Taverne participation conditions here. The Library's Open Access team can help to verify the conditions and provide additional information if required.
• If you meet the conditions, you can sign a personal agreement in which you consent to WUR making your short scientific works available through the WUR repository Research@WUR six months after the first publication online or in print. Note that, short scientific work by WU authors, published after 1 January 2023, will be shared Open Access by default, six months after the first publication online or in print.

(B) Self-archiving the Author Accepted Manuscript

If the Taverne Amendment is not an option for you, you can self-archive the peer-reviewed and accepted version of your article: the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) when the publisher’s embargo period has expired.

• Please check in the WUR Journal Browser if the publisher allows you to deposit the AAM in Research@WUR after the embargo period.
• Send the AAM of your article upon publication to WUR Library and include the DOI if available. WUR Library will add a cover page with information about sharing, citing and the DOI. You can download this AAM example (PDF, 184 KB). When the embargo period expires, WUR Library will make the AAM full text available in Research@WUR.
