Your job

As a software developer for Wageningen Marine Research, you facilitate researchers in setting up data structures and developing complex software and applications.

Together with your colleagues from the application support team, you will develop and manage various applications for collecting, verifying, storing, and distributing diverse datasets. You will work on different projects with various stakeholders within Wageningen Marine Research (WMR). Through this intensive collaboration with researchers, you will also initiate many projects and improvement proposals yourself.

Your tasks and responsibilities as a software developer are:

  • Developing, testing, and implementing new (complex) (web) applications within WMR;
  • Working independently on specific development tasks within projects;
  • Participating in projects related to (new) solution directions;
  • Advising both researchers and WMR's clients, such as ministries or commercial parties, on modern data access/distribution possibilities;
  • Providing support within the application support team in other areas such as functional management, testing, and database development;
  • Maintaining and further developing existing applications, implementing new software, and fixing bugs in existing software.

Team
You will be working with a small and dedicated team of IT specialists for WMR in IJmuiden. The team consists of a Database Developer, Functional Manager, Technical Manager, Application Developer, a Content Data Specialist, and an Information Manager.

Wageningen Marine Research and IT Environment
We operate in an applied scientific environment focused on marine and freshwater ecology, where we collect and store field data for analyses and complex models. For development, we primarily use Python and Django/CSS, and we deploy software through containerization and Kubernetes. Our databases primarily run on PostgreSQL. Development takes place for both Windows and Linux platforms. As part of a small team, you will regularly collaborate with approximately 190 WMR colleagues.

Your qualities

You are an enthusiastic, eager-to-learn, and ambitious software developer who strives to achieve the highest possible goals together with our researchers. You work meticulously, enabling you to write, test, and document efficient, reusable, and clean code. You can work independently and collaborate effectively within a team. Additionally, you are customer-oriented, allowing you to build strong relationships with researchers while keeping the end result in sight.

You also possess:

  • A completed degree in computer science or another relevant technical field at the university (WO) or higher professional education (HBO) level;
  • Demonstrable work experience with Python and its associated toolboxes;
  • In addition to experience with Linux, knowledge of Kubernetes and API development is a plus;
  • Proficiency in the Dutch language.

We offer, depending on your experience, a competitive gross salary of between € 3.088,- and € 5.035,- for a full-time working week of 36 hours, in accordance with the CLA Wageningen Research (scale 10). Additionally, a contract for 32 hours can be discussed. You will initially receive a one-year contract, which will be extended to an open-ended contract upon in mutual enthusiasm.
