We need to prepare now for weather extremes like floods and droughts, and this requires bold political decisions for the long term, says Wieke Pot. "As scientists, we can assist governments by providing insights into available policy instruments."

Despite concerns about the impacts of climate change, Wieke Pot advocates for developing more positive ways of talking about the future and she emphasizes the importance of collaboration, not only between governments but also across different disciplines. "I believe that governments need to become more foreward looking and better able to make the bold decisions that are needed to steer transitions and help us prepare for climate change."

Wieke Pot is an Assistant Professor of "Long-Term Governance for Water and Climate Change" at the Public Administration and Policy Group of Wageningen University and Research and a council member of the Dutch Scientific Climate Council.

She is one of the speakers at the Opening of the Academic Year 2024-2025, themed "The Water-Food Connection: Ensuring Future Food Security." Wageningen University & Research will celebrate the opening of the academic year on Monday, September 2, 2024, from 16:00 - 17:30 at Omnia on the Wageningen Campus and online.

The event can be followed live via the page of the Opening Academic Year 2024-2025, and the recordings will also be available afterward. Wieke Pot and the second OAJ speaker, Hester Biemans, a Researcher in Water and Food Security, will also give their presentations at the Wageningen library on Wednesday, September 4, at 20:00.
