The complex interplay of water and food production in Asia is a cause for concern because it faces multiple threats, says Hester Biemans, a researcher in Water and Food Security at Wageningen Environmental Research. Through her research, Biemans aims to gain a better understanding of the connection between water and food.

Food production in Asia is threatened by the impacts of climate change: changes in precipitation, heatwaves, and melting glaciers. At the same time, the population in the region is dense and increasing. By integrating many different processes into models, Biemans seeks to gain insight into the intricate connections between water availability and food production.

Hester Biemans is a researcher in the Water and Food research group at Wageningen Environmental Research and a special professor in the Earth Systems and Global Change Group. She is one of the speakers at the Opening of the Academic Year 2024-2025, with the theme "The Water-Food Connection: Ensuring Future Food Security." Wageningen University & Research will celebrate the opening of the academic year on Monday, September 2, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM at Omnia on Wageningen Campus and online.

The event can be followed live via the overview page of the Opening of the Academic Year 2024-2025. The recordings will also be available for viewing afterward. Hester Biemans and the second OAJ speaker, Wieke Pot, a university lecturer in "Long-term Governance for Water and Climate Change," will give their presentations at the Wageningen library on Wednesday, September 4, at 8:00 PM.
