Improving Library e-learning accessibility
At WUR Library, we want to ensure that our e-learning material is accessible to everyone. To do this, we’ve started a new project to improve the digital accessibility of our e-learning modules.
Why it matters
The Library’s e-learning modules help students develop information literacy, an important academic skill. The modules must also meet the needs of students with disabilities and provide a quality learning experience to all students.
Pilot digital accessibility
Last summer, we started a pilot to improve the digital accessibility of two modules: ‘Identify and access the information you need’ and ‘Cite and reference your information sources’.
Since WUR is partially conforming to the WCAG 2.1 AA standards, this is also our goal. To improve accessibility, we used the open-source content authoring tool Xerte. We also tested our redesigned modules with a few students with functional disabilities.
These updated modules will be rolled out in period 1 to gather large-scale feedback to fine-tune the design and functionalities. We also plan to update the remaining 11 e-learning modules. The renewed modules are currently accessible only to our students through Brightspace. You can request access if you want to look at them.
Your experience matters
If you have a functional disability and would like to contribute your insights, we'd love to hear from you! Please, contact Joris Geurts to share your feedback and help us make our e-learning resources more accessible.
