Looking for an inspiring holiday read outside your field of study? Tip: The slow professor: challenging the culture of speed in the academy by M. Berg and B. K. Seeber. This book invites you to reflect on academic life and its fast-paced culture. Valérie Toebes, an information specialist at WUR Library, shares her insights and why it’s worth your time.

What's this book about and why should I read it?

Valérie explains: "The slow professor adapts the principle of the slow movement culture, which advocates enjoying life at a peaceful rhythm, to the academic world. Mangala Srinivas, chairholder of the Cell Biology and Immunology group, recommended the book to me. Mangala explained that the book is about how the corporatisation of academia has eroded 'timeless time'. It urges us to reclaim the unstructured, reflective moments that are essential for creativity, collegiality, and the true spirit of scholarship".

Valérie adds: "What I also like about the book is that it's relatively short. It has 90 pages, making it extra easy to pick up and read it. Fun fact, Mangala didn’t actually read the book but listened to it, a relaxing way to enjoy books".

I am convinced! Where can I find the book?

The e-book is in the Library's collection.
