Your job

As a research assistant in ichthyoplankton, you will process and analyze histological samples according to international guidelines. You will work in the laboratory using microscopy and image analysis to create histological preparations. The samples consist of fish eggs, larvae, fish gonads, and fish stomach contents. You will apply your knowledge and expertise in taxonomy and identification. Image analysis involves histological preparations of fish gonads and fish eggs and larvae. You will accurately process the results of these analyses into data templates and specific software.

Your tasks and responsibilities as a research assistant in ichthyoplankton include:

  • processing and analyzing samples;
  • processing data and results;
  • participating in calibration workshops.

Team and Location
You will work with a dedicated research team from Wageningen Marine Research at our location in IJmuiden. You will collaborate with this group of specialists on various projects. Additionally, you will participate in several multi-day sea surveys each year to collect and process samples.

ageningen Marine Research (WMR) is one of the nine institutes that form part of Wageningen Research. WMR is a leading, independent research institute with locations in IJmuiden, Den Helder, and Yerseke, focusing on strategic and applied marine ecological research. Our products and services are project-based and diverse in nature, including field research, large-scale experiments, exploratory laboratory studies, data management, and modeling.

Your qualities

You can work well both in a team and independently. An ideal candidate has a keen eye for maintaining the required quality standards and can perform tasks independently while adhering to established guidelines and deadlines.

Additionally, you possess:

  • a completed MBO (secondary vocational education) degree with demonstrable affinity for microscopic work;
  • experience in analyzing plankton samples and/or creating and analyzing histological preparations;
  • proficiency in the Dutch language.

In our international work environment, English is increasingly used for communication. For this position, the required language level is A2. If you do not yet have this level, we will support you, and you can receive assistance from our language center, Wageningen in’to Language.

We offer, depending on your experience, a competitive gross salary of between €2.287,- and €3.551,- for a full-time working week of 36 hours, in accordance with the CLA Wageningen Research (scale 5-7). Additionally, a contract for 32 hours can be discussed.) You will initially receive a one-year contract, which will be extended to an open-ended contract upon in mutual enthusiasm.
