Water research facilities and water quality, quantity and ecological models
Wageningen University & Research offers both highly specialised unique water research facilties and develops, maintains and operates models for our clients, our own research and educational purposes.
Water research facilities
Wageningen University & Research hosts highly specialised and unique water research facilities supported by multiple laboratories. The facilities enable excellent and specialised scientific, applied and contract research for companies and governmental authorities. In addition, students are offered opportunities to get acquainted and experienced with research using unique equipment.
Some of the unique facilties in Wageningen are:
ModuTech: an experimental research facility for water, renewable energy and recyclable materials. Researchers and students use the lab’s reactors to conduct research on wastewater treatment and biomass.
Kraijenhoff van de Leur Laboratory for Water and Sediment Dynamics: experimental research focuses on morphological responses to channel flow and overland flow. Current research topics are in the fields of stream restoration, gully erosion and side channels created by longitudinal dams. Established in 1973, renewed and relocated to Wageningen Campus in 2010.
Sinderhoeve: An experimental field station that encompasses experimental ditches, experimental ponds, laboratories (the ‘Sinderhuis’) and seven hectares of arable land. Focus: aquatic and terrestrial research on the behaviour and effects of chemical substances in the environment as well as for more basic ecological research questions. Since 2004 it runs in compliance with the OECD principles of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP),
Laboratory for Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA Lab): Lab under GLP compliance connected to Sinderhoeve equipped for chemical analysis supporting ecotoxicology research.
Water Quality, Quantity and Ecological Models
Wageningen University and Research develops, maintains and operates models for our clients, our own research and educational purposes. Our models are of high quality, ensured through a process of continuous improvements and a demonstrable product quality. Some of our models are Statutory Models and used in official research, monitoring and (ex-ante) evaluation processes.
Within the water domain, we are specifically known for modelling soil physics and processes, including water, in the unsaturated zone. Our models cover all spatial and temporal scales, including detailed modelling on field level and small timescales.
We invest in the ability to combine or link models of our own and with models from our partners, into a train of models. For example, we took the initiative to combine hydrological models into a comprehensive set of data and models into the ‘Netherlands Hydrological Instruments’.
