Contract Research Organization (CRO)
Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) is part of Wageningen University & Research. We are an independent research institute and as a Contract Research Organization (CRO) we provide effective solutions to issues faced by public and private clients.
Preclinical and clinical studies
We deploy our expertise in the field of animal diseases to find effective solutions to questions raised by governments and companies. To this end, we conduct preclinical and clinical studies for clients. We are also partners in innovative research and development trajectories, for example aimed at finding a prevention or control strategy such as vaccine development.

Animal models
Before medicines become available to people, they must be extensively and thoroughly tested in preclinical trials and clinical trials. Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) has unique expertise in animal models for infectious diseases in various species ranging from livestock to rodents.
Pathogens
Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) secures animal and public health through research into veterinary infectious diseases as well as zoonoses. There is broad expertise available on notifiable, zoonotic and endemic pathogens that threaten veterinary and public health. And we have a broad collection of pathogens.
Vaccine development
The use of vaccines is still the most effective and powerful option in the prevention of animal and human diseases. As a contract research organization (CRO), Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) develops vaccines against viral and bacterial diseases together with our public and private clients.
Diagnostic assays
In the veterinary domain, diagnostic tests are extremely important, as they are needed to keep livestock healthy and guarantee food safety.
CRO services
Over time, Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) has developed services that are frequently requested by our customers. These include, for example, testing of disinfectants against infectious agents, selection and production of llama antibodies (VHHs) and next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics services.
Epidemiology
Within Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) the spread, control and prevention of infectious animal diseases are areas of interest studied by the Department of Epidemiology and Risk Assessment. When an outbreak appears, discussions on control are fed by this epidemiological knowledge and modelling.
Call for partners
Together with partners, Wageningen Bioveterinary Research carries out innovative research that contributes to the prevention, eradication and control of animal infectious diseases. Do you see opportunities for collaborations? Please do not hesitate to contact us about the projects below or with your own research idea.
Host-pathogen interactions
We create innovations at the forefront of applied science in the field of host pathogen interactions. Due to our state-of-the-art, biosecure, high-containment facilities, we can realise laboratory and animal studies on highly contagious pathogens. Our research focus is disease prevention via vaccination, early warning systems including diagnostics and increasing the natural disease resistance of animals.
