Everyone should have a Catharina in their life

Cathrien is not just a friend or PhD colleague; she’s a guardian angel who swooped into my life when I needed her most. When I arrived in The Netherlands – my first trip in Europe, a stranger in a foreign land, hailing from the tropical warmth of Cameroon – I felt lost and alone but Cathrien changed everything. From the moment I stepped off the plane, Cathrien was there for me. She made it her mission to ensure I felt welcomed and supported in my new home.

Even on subsequent trips when I landed at the airport, she was there with a warm smile and open arms, ready to whisk me away to safety. And when she couldn't make it, her husband Pieter stepped in, extending their kindness without hesitation. But Cathrien's generosity didn't stop there. She took me under her wing, showing me the ropes of life in The Netherlands. One of my fondest memories is of the days she took me to the Ouwehands Zoo in Rhenen during my first trip. And to the Burgers Zoo in Arnhem during the second. It was a magical experience, exploring the wonders of nature together and marvelling at the beauty of the animal kingdom. She took care of all expenses and she didn’t stop there; she bought a beautiful toy for my son as a gift.

Beyond the leisurely outings, Cathrien went above and beyond to help me navigate the practicalities of everyday life. Whether it was topping up my train and bus card or offering invaluable advice on adjusting to a new culture, she was always there, a pillar of strength and support. In many ways, Cathrien became more than just a friend or colleague, she became a surrogate mother to me. Her unconditional love and unwavering kindness touched my heart in ways I cannot fully express. In her, I found not only a guide but also a source of comfort and solace during the challenging times of adaptation and homesickness. The list is too long.

The kindness that Cathrien has shown me has left an indelible mark on my soul. It has taught me the true meaning of compassion and selflessness, inspiring me to pay it forward and spread love wherever I go. I am eternally grateful for her presence in my life, and I will carry her kindness with me always, wherever my journey may lead.
