Next Level Animal Sciences: sensor technology
Sensor technology allows for continuous and real-time monitoring of animal well-being, as well as registering a variety of physiological parameters and behaviour, both in individual animals and herds. Innovative smart sensor technology also provides an alternative to invasive measuring methods and animal testing.
Within this research trajectory of the Next Level Animal Sciences programme, different types of sensors are being developed for different applications:
- Sensors capable of monitoring the energy system and physiological status of the animals in real-time
- Gastrointestinal micro-capsules, with which health data of pigs can be gathered remotely and in real-time
- Portable biosensors to determine blood composition and metabolism
The data gathered with the different sensors are integrated and used to develop tools with which behavioural patterns can be automatically recognised.
