Seed molecular biology & Biotechnology
Seeds have the potential to survive storage and to time germination to appropriate moments that allow successful establishment of the seedling.
The research topics related to Seed Molecular Biology & Biotechnology focus on fundamental aspects of seed traits, such as desiccation tolerance, dormancy, longevity and germination, in relation to their ecological importance and application prospective for the industry.
In the WSSC we develop and adapt biotechnology methods to investigate how these traits are regulated in model and crop seeds. These methods include, molecular cloning, RT-qPCR, RNA-seq, RIP-seq, proteomics, metabolomics and others.
These methods are also combined with expertise on phenotyping, genetics, microbiology, microscopy, ecology, pathology and bioinformatics to develop high quality fundamental research with applications in seed industry.
