Your job

Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is recruiting a full professor to chair the Toxicology group (TOX). The TOX group develops the scientific underpinning of toxicological processes related to human and environmental health and translates this into a risk assessment of chemicals for humans and the environment. The group contributes to the quality of human and environmental health, supports informed decision making and enables the development and use of safe chemicals and products.

The current scientific focus of the group revolves around understanding mechanisms of toxicity including cross-species extrapolations focussing on novel toxicity endpoints, and using animal-friendly technologies including cell-based assays and computational models.

We seek a chair with a research profile that matches or complements current strengths of the group, and with strong affinity for mechanistic toxicology.

The position of chair of the TOX group provides you the opportunity to further develop your own research line and your leadership profile. Together with other staff members, you are responsible for the academic and operational management of this chair group. You will define the research strategy, lead the team of scientists, lecturers, and support staff, and further strengthen the national and international position of the group. You are also responsible for teaching and innovations in BSc, MSc and PhD courses, with the objective to contribute to the strong reputation and position of WUR in higher education.

The TOX group currently consists of ~38 team members, including 3 tenured scientific staff members, 5 technicians/research assistants, secretaries ~ 25  PhD candidates and 5 postdocs. More information about current research and teaching of the group can be found at Toxicology – Research output — Research@WUR.

Your qualities

As a successful candidate,

  • you are a scholar with a PhD degree and an internationally proven scientific track record in the field of toxicology or a related discipline, and with a strong affinity for mechanistic toxicological research;
  • you have experience to build a bridge between the fields of human and environmental toxicology (i.e. a “One Health” perspective) with your long-term ideas and convert them into concrete plans using new approach methodologies;
  • You have experience in developing and maintaining a broad (inter)national network with different partners (e.g. academic institutes, societal organizations, policymakers, private sector);
  • you have experience with and were successful in attracting competitive grants;
  • you have experience with interesting and motivating students and with supervising students with diverse backgrounds. You also have experience in innovating and developing Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD level courses and programs;
  • you draw energy from and have experience in leading professionals in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team. You bring empathic and inclusive leadership with a focus on people’s development, team building and creating synergy.
