Publication of book 'Genetics of selection in honeybees'
The book is intended to be useful for scientists and beekeepers who are interested or engaged in honeybee breeding but who have not received intensive training in genetics.
Between 2017 and 2024, researchers from the Animal Breeding and Genomics group (ABG) of Wageningen University & Research (WUR), together with researchers from Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, Macedonia, and the Institute for Bee Research Hohen Neuendorf in Hohen Neuendorf, Germany, published four papers on honeybee breeding. Because of the interest in the papers, the authors decided to publish a book on breeding programs in honeybees. Several chapters of the book have now been made available online.
A work in progress
“The current chapters focus on the quantitative genetic basis underlying the designs of honeybee breeding programs,” says Pim Brascamp, professor emeritus of ABG, “but the intention is to extend the book with aspects of practical implementation.” The current version consists of four chapters and a brief introduction.
While the chapters are written in a straightforward and easy-to-understand manner, the authors invite readers to get in touch if they have suggestions to improve the accessibility and usefulness of the text.
