The current work plan relates to communication with stakeholders about the state of the sea bass stock (Dicentrarchus labrax) in Europe and the possible catch-limiting measures that are laid down by the Ministry of LNV for the sea bass population.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) strives for an ecologically and economically sustainable fishing sector. The sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) population in Europe has been steadily declining since 2010. This decrease is related to too high a fishing effort and a low recruitement of juvenile sea bass (ICES, 20211). In recent years, the sea bass stock has shown a cautious recovery, but is still not at the desired level. According to the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), catch limits are necessary to keep the spawning stock healthy. In recent years, ICES has provided annual advice on the status of sea bass in the central and southern North Sea, the Irish Sea, the English Channel, the Bristol Channel and the Celtic Sea. Since 2015, the Ministry of LNV has been using catch limits to contribute to the recovery of the sea bass population. In order to arrive at efficient and responsible measures, the necessary discussion with stakeholders, additional research and monitoring is of great importance. Within the current project, consultation is taking place with relevant stakeholders regarding healthy stocks of sea bass.
