Juliet Nicolai – Sustainability and Environment
Why sustainability and environment?
I am interested in how we can create a more sustainable society and what the role of communication can be in these processes of individual and collective change. Why, for instance, do people look at nature and the environment in vastly different ways? And in what ways can thinking about the environment be influenced.
Communication and sustainability and environment
I am particularly interested in the energy transition in the Netherlands. Specifically: How can we generate as much sustainable energy as possible as quickly as possible? This brings together many different groups of people with different interests, such as citizens, governments, municipalities, consultancy agencies and activists. The government wants to build lots of wind farms, but citizens and activists often disagree. I find it interesting to look at these processes and find out how best to come to amicable solutions. The best thing about this Master's programme is that I feel in a position to contribute to a better world. For me, social changes and innovation systems are key concepts.
Courses related to sustainability and environment
I have chosen the free electives ‘Environmental Psychology’ and ‘Principles of Environmental Sciences’. Environmental Psychology examines humans’ interaction with the environment and the Earth. Principles of Environmental Sciences deals with issues related to soil, water and air. How can science solve these problems and what is the role of government, citizens and other stakeholders.
