On November 20, suppliers and potential processors from the coatings industry gathered to explore the potential of biobased ingredients for use in coatings. This comprehensive workshop, organized by the Dutch Association of Paint and Printing Ink Manufacturers (VVVF), Avans University of Applied Sciences' Centre of Expertise MNEXT (MNEXT), and Wageningen Food & Biobased Research, was part of the RECOAT project. Through this subsidized ‘Kennis op Maat’ initiative, the partners are developing insights and tools to help the coatings sector transition from fossil-based ingredients to more renewable alternatives.

The workshop is the follow-up to the kick-off meeting of the RECOAT project, which was held at the end of September. It began with a presentation on the current state of biobased raw materials suitable for use in paints, inks, adhesives, and sealants. This was followed by four in-depth sessions. Jacco van Haveren and Rolf Blaauw from Wageningen Food & Biobased Research shared their insights on the chemistry and commercial availability of biobased raw materials. Van Haveren discussed biobased materials and their supply chain security, while Blaauw highlighted the products in which these raw materials can be utilized. Han van Kasteren from Avans VAS addressed the state-of-the-art in biobased pigments. The session concluded with detailed discussions among participants about binders, resins, solvents, and pigments and additives, respectively.

A total of 3 workshops will be organized in the context of this project, with a possible additional workshop during the completion of the project. The next one is scheduled for March 11, 2025. This time the participants are offered opportunities for further in-depth one-on-one discussions between coating producers and suppliers of biobased raw materials, as well as agricultural firms.

Lab technicians, R&D staff, and professionals with chemical expertise from paint, ink, adhesives, and sealants companies are all invited to participate in the workshops associated with the RECOAT project. The primary focus of these workshops is to share knowledge and provide practical tools. The project places special emphasis on supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and newcomers to the industry.

This project is funded by Topsectors Agri&Food and Horticulture & Starting Materials through the Kennis op Maat (KoM) call of November 2023.
