Project
Business operationalization of Oil palm woodfurniture
The core content or message of the workshop is that the use of oil palm trunk as building material and furniture can be an option to mainstreaming sustainability transition on the field of renewable carbon-based materials. The innovation in using the oil palm trunk as building material and furniture is plausible to implement in oil palm producing countries to increase the circularity of oil palm and palm oil production, while at the same time also contribute to reducing the use of timber from forest that may involve issues on deforestation.
Introduction
As part of ongoing efforts to promote sustainable practices in the palm oil industry, an exciting project is underway to explore the use of oil palm trunks as a viable material for furniture and building materials. Traditionally, oil palm trunks have been overlooked as a byproduct of replanting cycles, but recent research has shown that these trunks hold significant potential as eco-friendly, durable resources for construction and furniture production.
Objective
This outreach project aims to advocate for and promote the widespread adoption of building materials derived from oil palm trunk as a sustainable alternative in construction, emphasizing environmental benefits and fostering a circular economy approach.
This outreach built upon Sustainable Oil Palm (SustainPalm) program, which focus in promoting and improving sustainable oil palm management and practices in Indonesia.
Method
The project relies on:
- A competition linked to an exhibition,
- Two workshops, including a presentation to a lay audience,
- A series of videos, including an educational video and videos from the workshops.
(Expected) results
By transforming waste from oil palms into high-quality products, we can reduce waste and lessen the reliance on traditional timber, which is facing declining stocks globally. This innovative approach also supports the circular economy, turning waste into valuable resources.
