In a significant step towards addressing the pressing challenges faced by Dhaka’s food system, the Dhaka Food Agenda 2041 was officially launched during the Urban Food Futures Conference in Dhaka. This visionary roadmap aims to meet the challenge of providing the city's residents with sufficient, safe, nutritious, and sustainably-sourced food, fostering the necessary pathways for change for sustainable and resilient food systems in 2041.

The Dhaka Food Agenda 2041, developed by the Government of Bangladesh, with technical expertise of FAO and Wageningen University and Research, seeks to combat food insecurity, promote equitable access to nutritious food, and reduce the environmental impact of food production. This landmark initiative reflects the commitment of the stakeholders to tackle the complex issues surrounding food systems and pave the way for a prosperous future for all residents of Dhaka.

Five key directions

At its core, the agenda addresses five key directions for action.

The Dhaka Food Agenda 2041 places a strong emphasis on promoting the consumption of healthy and nutritious food among the city's residents. Through awareness campaigns and educational programs, the initiative aims to improve food environments and dietary choices and enhance access to diverse and nutritious food options.

With a growing population and urbanization, Dhaka faces increasing food demands. The agenda focuses on developing strategies to ensure sustainable food production and distribution to meet the city's future needs. This includes investing in innovative farming techniques including urban gardening, expanding agricultural land, and strengthening food supply chains.

Recognizing the vital role of individuals and communities in the food system, the agenda seeks to optimize livelihoods for all stakeholders involved. It aims to provide opportunities for smallholder farmers, improve working conditions in the food industry, and promote entrepreneurship and innovation in the sector.

The Dhaka Food Agenda 2041 aims to enhance the city's resilience to potential shocks and disruptions in the food system. It focuses on building adaptive capacity, improving infrastructure for storage and transportation, and establishing early warning systems to mitigate risks associated with climate change, natural disasters, and other emergencies.

The agenda recognizes the importance of preserving the environment and biodiversity while meeting the food needs of the city. It promotes sustainable agricultural practices, encourages the use of renewable energy, and emphasizes the conservation of natural resources to ensure that Dhaka's food system operates in harmony with nature.

About the Dhaka Food Agenda 2041

Speaking at the launch event, Mr. Ahmed Khan, the Minister of Food, highlighted the significance of the agenda, stating, "The Dhaka Food Agenda 2041 represents our collective determination to build a resilient and sustainable food system that leaves no one behind. By working together and leveraging the expertise of our partners, we are confident that we can overcome the challenges faced by our food systems and ensure food security for all."

It is a long-term commitment that seeks to transform the way food is produced, distributed, and consumed in the city. With its comprehensive approach to transform and strengthen urban food systems governance and collaborative partnerships, this initiative holds the potential to create a positive impact on the lives of Dhaka's residents, promote economic growth, and contribute to a more sustainable and food-secure future. By sharing lessons learned and best practices, the Dhaka Food Agenda 2041 also has the potential to inspire and catalyze positive change in other cities facing similar challenges, leading the way towards sustainable and resilient food systems.
