WUR hosts the 4th Dutch Environmental and Resource Economics Day
On February 7, 2025, Wageningen University & Research (WUR) proudly hosted the fourth annual Dutch Environmental and Resource Economics (DEARE) Day, a pivotal event that continues to serve as a cornerstone for economists, policy advisers, and students dedicated to sustainable solutions. This year's gathering was held at the Leeuwenborch building on WUR's campus.
The event commenced with welcoming remarks from Professor Francisco Alpízar, chair of the Environmental Economics and Natural Resources (ENR) group at WUR. His address set an inspiring tone, encouraging attendees to think boldly about the future of environmental economics.

Reflecting on Innovation and Sustainability
DEARE Day 2025 was more than just a conference; it was a catalyst for change. Attendees departed with actionable insights, strengthened networks, and a renewed sense of purpose in addressing the complex environmental challenges of our time. The event successfully highlighted the importance of inter-institutional collaboration and innovation in tackling global environmental issues.
Panels featuring scholars and experts from academia and government explored critical topics such as regional development, technology adoption and the green transition, among many others. Extended networking breaks facilitated meaningful connections among participants, encouraging collaboration and the deepening of professional relationships in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.
As the global community continues its journey toward sustainability, the lessons and connections forged at DEARE Day 2025 are poised to influence future initiatives and policies. Wageningen University & Research has once again demonstrated its leadership in driving impactful discussions and solutions, ensuring that the spirit of DEARE Day extends far beyond the event itself.

The DEARE Day
DEARE Day is an annual event with a rotating host institution. The 2024 edition was hosted by Utrecht University, and the 2023 event took place at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The host for the 2026 edition is yet to be determined. DEARE Day plays a crucial role for environmental economists by fostering inter-institutional discussions on how economic theories and policies can drive sustainable environmental outcomes, aligning with regulatory frameworks and global sustainability goals. It provides a platform for economists, policy advisers, and students to share their work, receive feedback, and exchange insights on various aspects of environmental economics, including market-based environmental solutions, green transitions, and the socio-economic impacts of climate policies, among many others.
