EAST AFRICA FOOD FUTURES
Towards regenerative, inclusive food systems in Eastern Africa.
How can you ensure that Eastern African farmers harvest more from their land, while nature simultaneously flourishes? And can these food systems contribute to solving issues like inequality, poverty and youth unemployment?
Together with our East-African partners, the East African Food Futures project collects evidence and identifies pathways for regenerative and inclusive food systems in Eastern Africa. We do this through mobilising innovation capacity and strengthening the enabling environment via living labs. The project builds upon many experiences from regenerative and inclusive food practices in Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia. Our East African partners will initiate ‘living labs’ in which they bring stakeholders together to design food futures that illustrate their vision on these sustainable food systems.

Sustainable Intensification of Dairy Production Indonesia
The Sustainable Intensification of Dairy Production Indonesia (SIDPI) project is an action oriented research project aiming to increase productivity of smallholder dairy farms in West Java, while improving food security and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The project will do this by developing and implementing improved strategies for manure, feeding, and animal health and management

Livestock and Manure Management
The Livestock and Manure Management Component (LMMC) of the CCAC Agriculture Initiative to reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs) supports the adoption of integrated manure management practices across the globe by increasing knowledge and awareness, removing barriers to action and enhancing practice change.
Livestock play an important role in global food production and in agricultural and rural economies in many developing regions. While the livestock sector is one of the fastest growing subsectors of agriculture, it is also an important contributor to anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, in which manure and manure management account for 10% of total livestock emissions.
Manure is a valuable source of nutrients, organic matter and renewable energy. However, manure management is often poor and as a consequence, nutrients and organic matter are lost, causing environmental and climate problems and threatening public health.
The overall goal of the Livestock and Manure Management Component (LMMC) is to integrate manure management practices into livestock systems and improve existing practices to reduce SLCPs and other harmful emissions to the environment, capture methane as an energy source, and optimise nutrient utilisation for crop production by managing and removing barriers to action with a view toward enhancing food security and sustainable development.
The Livestock and Manure Management Component focuses its actions in Africa, South and Southeast Asia and Latin America. The project is coordinated by a Central Hub (consisting of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN (FAO) and Wageningen UR), working in close collaboration with three Regional Centres (Stockholm Environment Institute in Bangkok, the International Livestock Research Institute in Nairobi, and the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center in San Jose). Together the LMMC identifies opportunities and conducts work in regions, builds networks and partnerships, gathers information, and implements projects.

Dairy Business Information Service and Support project Ethiopia (DairyBISS)
DairyBISS is an EKN-funded project to stimulate private dairy sector development in Ethiopia, carried out by Wageningen UR Livestock Research and partners in Ethiopia and The Netherlands. Starting from 2015, this 3-year project will establish a dairy business platform that initiates and follows activities in business development, capacity building, and business information development.
The aim of this project is to increase the number of profitable dairy farms and firms in the Ethiopian private sector, by improving B2B relations, the availability and utilization of quality business information, and advice.
