Dr. Barbara van der Meij obtained her PhD on ‘The impact of fish oil on clinical parameters and quality of life in patients with cancer’ at the VU University in 2013. From 2014 to 2015 she worked as Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Translational Research in Aging and Longevity (CTRAL), Texas A&M University (US) and moved to Australia in 2016 to work as a Conjoint Senior Research Dietitian for Bond University and Mater Health. In these roles, she carried out clinical trials and metabolic studies and was actively involved in developing and delivering teaching courses for the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics.

In 2020, she returned to the Netherlands, where she now is appointed as a senior researcher in the department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Lifestyle at the HAN University of Applied Sciences and the Division of Human Nutrition and Health at Wageningen University & Research.

Her current research focuses on nutrition and lifestyle in chronic diseases. As part of a collaboration between the HAN and Radboudumc, Dr. van der Meij is running three long-term projects around information needs on nutrition during cancer treatment, lifestyle in gynaecology healthcare, and nutrition and lifestyle around surgery. She published around 40 peer-reviewed papers, is an honorary assistant professor at Bond University, and serves as an associate editor for Clinical Nutrition ESPEN and Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care. Dr. van der Meij is currently a mentor of 2 PhD students.
