More than 500 people will participate in the conference “Transforming Consumption-Production Systems towards Just and Sustainable Futures” July 5-8, 2023 of which about 400 will be present live. 100 people will participate online from around the world.

From US to China

Topics range from food to clothing and from production to circular consumption across all social science disciplines (e.g. sociology, politics, economics and psychology), while engaging with the natural sciences. The submission address challenges from all over the world.

The conference aims to stimulate interaction: meeting new people, obtaining new insights and ideas and exploring novel pathways to advancing towards sustainable futures.

Inter- and transdisciplinary conference

According to the coordinators of the Conference (Sigrid Wertheim-Heck, Daniel Fischer, Mary Greene, Julia Shen and Maria Caballero Pons), the main emphasis of this conference is the role of social sciences in transforming towards sustainable futures while reaching out to inter- and transdisciplinary collaborations.

The event will serve as platform for building and enhancingconnections between research, practice, and policyto increase understanding and action of how to move transformations to sustainable consumption and production forward.

The three day event will start with a warm welcome from Prof. Arthur Mol and will feature daily keynote speeches and multiple parallel sessions. Besides more academic oriented sessions, the conference hosts also numerous science-policy dialogue sessions.

Political and policy debate

Transformative social change is more likely at a confluence of a political window of opportunity, public receptiveness to change, and policy and research ideas ready for implementation and experimentation.

One highlighted session is on Ukraine. “Pathways for the sustainability transition of Ukraine's post conflict food system” will bring on site the Rector Stanislav Nikolaienko, of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine and the vice rector Vadym Tkachuk The session will be a dialogue on pathways forward for Ukraine and will also host other high delegates, such as our Dutch agricultural counselor Reinout Nuijten (online), and others.
