Radio1 interviews Niels Breve about sturgeon bycatch reporting
PhD candidate Niels Breve talks with NPO Radio1 about the decrease in bycatch reports of rare fish by fishermen. Niels is working on the reintroduction of European sturgeon to Dutch waters, and for this work fishermen can function as eyes and ears when they report the presence of sturgeons in their catch. However, fishermen are becoming increasingly afraid that reporting bycatch will impact their fishing practice which they cannot afford due to rising costs. Niels talks about how this may impact the research and the conservation of sturgeon, and discusses how we may restore trust of fishermen.
