A team of Wageningen University & Research scientists have developed a scientific board game, in which all kind of participants can play a role in confronting, negotiating, and trying out future food strategies.

One of the most critical challenges of our present and future: ending and preventing global hunger. For this we need to visualize a future food system. And this is not just for scientists. Everyone needs to be involved.

SaFER 2100

The board game ‘SaFER 2100’ represents a futuristic world and invites players to explore collaborative strategies for a safe-by-design approach to the future of food production. A safe-by-design approach means players are stimulated to collaborate to make decisions that support sustainable agricultural practices while building food systems capable of withstanding shocks and disruptions. The game simulates the scientific complexities of designing resilient nature-positive food systems that ensure food safety for humans, animals, and safety for the environment, all while facing a set of dilemmas.

Inhabitants of the future earth

Within the research project ‘Food security and the value of water’ the game was developed, and played with groups of national and international stakeholders of the so called Future Food System: policy makers, farmers, food industry, and high-school students, who are the actual inhabitants of the future earth themselves.

Event ‘2024 Futures of Food Systems’

Results, visions and insights from the visionary playing will be presented on the public “2024 Futures of Food Systems” event in Wageningen on 30 September 2024. Also at that event, you may be challenged to participate in the game yourself. Registration is still possible.

Partners

SaFER 2100 has been developed by Wageningen Food Safety Research, Wageningen Food & Biobased Research and the Wageningen Law Group. Game design: Naomi Dam en Renée van Alst.

Board game is available

The scientific board game is also now available to use for your own visionary group / event, it facilitates max 24 players in English or Dutch. For more information, please contact the project lead, esmer.jongedijk@wur.nl.
