PhD defence
Parent, child and professional on the same page, Implementation and evaluation of a client-accessible health record in Dutch Centres for Youth and Family
Summary
Parent, Child & Professional on the Same Page.
In the Noord-Veluwe region, the Centre for Youth and Family (CJG) has developed a unique Electronic Patient Record (EPR-Youth) that is fully transparent for parents and adolescents, aiming to improve collaboration with and around families. A PhD study examined the development and impact of EPR-Youth.
The development of EPR-youth with three organizations, parents and adolescents was complex because of diverging interests and ideas. Nevertheless, it yielded valuable results. The study found that using
EPR-Youth increased parents’ and adolescents’ autonomny. EPR-Youth also enhanced collaboration between professionals and improved perceived quality of care. However, informing parents and adolescents about EPR-Youth appeared essential.
Recommendations from this study include co-developing accessible health records with end-users, addressing professionals' attitudes and supporting staff with appropriate organizational facilities. When these topics are addressed adequately during implementation, transparent health records can contribute to equal and effective healthcare for all.
