Celebrate the Opening Academic Year together
The city of Wageningen and Wageningen University & Research (WUR) are inextricably linked together. This is why we are happy to celebrate the opening of the academic year 2023-2024 with the students and residents of Wageningen in the centre of our lovely city. The Executive Board of WUR would like to welcome you to this event in the Grote Kerk.
This year marks the 105th anniversary of Wageningen University & Research. At the opening of the academic year we will focus on food production because what we eat and how we produce our food has a large impact on climate change, biodiversity, health and many other aspects of our lives.
The theme of this year’s opening is Shaping Sustainable Futures. What might a sustainable future look like and what role will food play in that future? Science can and wants to provide a major contribution to the answers to these questions. Diverse research fields make diverse solutions and problems visible. The scientific community and society must discuss the dilemmas we face and we will have to make choices for a sustainable future.
During the opening of the academic year three researchers from WUR will share their insights into a sustainable future. They will discuss topics ranging from the history of famine to food production in Africa and the food policy of the European Union. Our researchers will demonstrate what is possible if we are open to various perspectives and to working together on the future.
On Wednesday evening 6 September we would like to welcome you in the Grote Kerk in Wageningen to join us in speaking about these themes in the presence of Dr Sjoukje Heimovaara, the president of our Executive Board. Our researchers from Wageningen University & Research look forward to sharing their ideas and views on what is necessary and what is possible. The evening will close with a musical performance by Sekoe Dioubate.
We hope to see you in the Grote Kerk in Wageningen on 6 September from 20.00-21.30. Talks will be given in English. For more information please contact us at oay@wur.nl.
