Project
AFI PhD Knowledge Exchange Programme, June 24, 2019
Background and objectives
Following the success of the last Knowledge Exchange Programme in Japan (2016), the PhD candidates of the Aquaculture and Fisheries group (AFI) of Wageningen University (NL) planned a new edition in China (2019). China has a long-lasting aquaculture and fisheries history and is the world’s largest fish producer. The 2-week Knowledge Exchange Programme took place in June 2019. This was an opportunity for AFI PhD candidates to exchange knowledge and to expand their network. It was a chance for our group to stimulate collaborations with Chinese colleagues.

Programme
A group of 10 PhD candidates travelled to East China, together with AFI’s professor Geert Wiegertjes. The group visited top-notch research institutes in Qingdao and Shanghai areas. In both cities, a one-day conference was organized by AFI PhD candidates in collaboration with local leading research institutions. This gave opportunities to both AFI and local PhD candidates to present their research and exchange their views on important topics such as developments in sustainable fish farming, advances in fish nutrition, fisheries policy, etc. Field visits to research facilities, fish farms, ports and fish markets were also organized.
