Sensors for measurement of methane concentration in the range typical for dairy housing are not available yet. This project developed criteria for continuous monitoring of methane emissions from dairy housing and explored the market availability. Eventually the Axetris LGD Compact-A CH4 sensor was chosen for extensive lab and field validation tests. Four identical sensors of this type were subjected to the study. Based on the results it can be concluded that this type of sensor performs equally to the reference method and can be used for measurement of methane concentration in dairy housing without further restrictions or corrections whenever the concentration within the concentration limits of 0-100 ppm. It is recommended to follow up on this research by comparing the sensor results with reference measurements to check on possible drift as a result of sensor aging. In the meantime, it is recommended to calibrate the sensor in a laboratory yearly according to the available test and validation protocol.
