Samenvatting
Policy integration is an increasingly popular approach when tackling nature conservation and environmental issues, including those in the peat meadow areas. This report explores the dimensions and possible drawbacks of policy integration, taking the Aldeboarn-De Deelen area process in the province of Friesland as an example. Although the strategy for this area has a number of policy objectives (soil subsidence, climate, water, agriculture), the focus is primarily on agriculture. The Natura 2000 objectives for the De Deelen area play a very limited part in the area process. Policy integration at the area level is made more difficult because the available schemes for agricultural management and downward valuation of land are as yet mostly sectoral and national. The analysis showed that it makes sense to take a critical view of the desire for more policy integration in area processes. Both policymakers and researchers (e.g. PBL) should weigh up the potential benefits (more effective, more support) against the potential drawbacks (more complex, delays to decision-making) on a situation-by-situation basis.
