SMP23014 Circular Urban Farming - Singapore

Since the Economic recession in 2008 and the recent COVID period, Singapore experienced severe tensions in the international food trade, and is currently developing a strategy to become more independent.  Singapore is in need of urban farming technologies that hardly put any further strain on the Green Plan 2030 and the 30/30-act goals of Singapore.

The objective of this project is to explore opportunities for Controlled Environmental Agriculture (CEA) in Singapore to reduce energy consumption using an additional renewable energy source. This is done by collecting, analysing, and processing technical information both in the Netherlands and Singapore and use these to develop a business case. The business case will be used to form a strong international partner consortium for developing a Topsector PPS-application in 2023. This follow-up proposal will focus on the combined extraction of energy AND nutrients from food waste streams in Singapore. The long-term goal is to achieve circular CEA for the urban environment. Circular in energy, nutrients, water, and CO2.
