Standard Material Transfer Agreement

The Centre for Genetic Resources, the Netherlands aims to provide genetic resources using the Standard Material Transfer Agreement (SMTA) of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA). This is a fixed contract between provider and user for the genetic resources listed in Annex 1 to the ITPGRFA, which can be used if the genetic resources are to be used for research, breeding, or training for food and agriculture.

CGN also provides a number of Non-Annex I crops under the SMTA. When it is not possible to use the SMTA for Annex I or Non-Annex I crops (e.g. when the country of origin has set additional conditions or when the material is to be used for other purposes than research, breeding, or training for food and agriculture) CGN provides genetic resources under a Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) that incorporates additional conditions.

More information on the SMTA and the ITPGRFA can be found on the website of the ABS Focal Point. A formal statement about the legal status of the CGN collections and how to access the collections is available on the page Access and Benefit-Sharing: Status of CGN collections.
