The potential adverse and beneficial effects of hydroxyanthraquinones in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)
Samenvatting (Engelstalig)
My PhD research focused on understanding the effects of hydroxyanthraquinones in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). These compounds have diverse (adverse and beneficial) effects. I explored how they activate a cellular defense mechanism called Nrf2, which protects against oxidative stress. Using advanced lab techniques and computer models, I assessed both the beneficial and toxic properties of these compounds and herbs containing these compounds used as food supplements and medicines. For instance, I found that some herbs like Aloe vera activate Nrf2 but also generate harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS). By studying these mechanisms, my research aims to guide safer use of TCMs and herbal medicines.
