This thesis explores tomato resistance against the fungi Botrytis cinerea and Alternaria solani. Typically, scientists look for tomato genes that provide resistance (R-genes) against the fungi. In this study, an alternative approach is used, focused on targeting tomato genes that provide vulnerability towards the pathogen. The vulnerable genes are known as susceptibility genes (S-genes). The thesis identifies new tomato S-genes towards B.cinerea and A.solani, PUB17 and PUB21, and discusses tomato CesA3 and tomato orthologs of Arabidopsis S-genes potential use in breeding for resistance. Despite potential drawbacks like stunted growth, this research contributes valuable insights for developing robust, broad-spectrum resistance in tomatoes against necrotrophic fungi, potentially revolutionizing agricultural practices.
