dr. T (Tarek) Alskaif

I am an Assistant Professor (UD1) of Energy Informatics in the INF group. My research leverages techniques in modeling, optimization, big data, and AI to advance the design and operation of smart energy systems, focusing on electricity market dynamics and the optimized integration of distributed energy resources such as solar energy, electric mobility and battery storage.

I am passionate about advancing the Sustainable Energy Transition and believe Digitalization is essential to achieving this goal. I completed my Ph.D. (2012-2016, Cum Laude) with the Statistical Analysis of Networks and Systems group at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Spain. From 2016 to 2020, I continued as a postdoc at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University, NL. This experience uniquely positioned me to integrate my background in computer engineering with energy systems, enabling impactful research with a focus on end-user applications. Currently, I lead and contribute to several national and EU projects, including HighLO Energy Markets (PI, EU), an interdisciplinary project with CERN, ACM, and ACER aimed at detecting energy market manipulation by uniquely combining particle physics methodologies and AI to develop advanced detection tools that enhance transparency and integrity in energy trading. Other current projects include Sustainable Energy Transition in Horticulture (PI, EWUU), and AI ELSA Lab (NWO). Past projects include Energy Intranets (NWO), PARENT (PI, EU), B-DER (coordinator/PI, TKI Urban Energy, RVO), Smart EV Solar Charging (EU) and GO-P2P (IEA, international).

I contribute to the fields of Energy Informatics, AI, and Smart Grids through various editorial and board roles at national and international levels. I serve as an Associate Editor for Transactions on Smart Grid (IEEE), Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems (IEEE), and Energy Conversion and Economics (IET). Additionally, I am a Program Committee member for Climate Change AI workshop, a Management Team member of the Netherlands Institute for Research on ICT (4TU.NIRICT), a Senior Member of IEEE, and a Steering Committee member for Smart Energy Systems and Technologies SEST conference.

To date, I have supervised over 45 MSc/BSc students, six PhDs, and two postdoctoral researchers. I teach and coordinate the Programming in Python and Big Data courses, and I am also the coordinator of the BSc Data Science Minor at WUR.
