This document contains a summary of the conceptual model for the Basic Quality of Nature (Basiskwaliteit Natuur – BKN) prepared by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) and Wageningen Environmental Research (WENR). It is the result of a series of internal and external discussions and workshops on the BKN, which is defined as the set of conditions necessary to allow that common species of urban and rural areas in the Netherlands may become common again. The conceptual model is based on various figures relating to the following aspects of the BKN: the value of nature, the assessment framework, the definition and scope, the basic model and a roadmap towards achieving the BKN. The roadmap contains the following elements: ambitions, scale, landscapes and biotopes, species and species groups, conditions, likelihood of presence and measures. Over the next few years the conceptual model will be further developed and worked out in more detail to produce a BKN knowledge toolset.
