In Groningen and Drenthe there are many organic soils that belong to the so-called non-classical peat soils. These are soils that are mostly used as arable land or nature reserve and where the peat layer is relatively thin, where it lies deep and where it is partially covered by a clay layer. These non-classical peat soils contribute significantly to the total CO2 emissions of the organic soils in the Netherlands. This study specifically looked at the possibilities of reducing CO2 emissions from these non-classical peat soils. Various hydrological, civil engineering and cultivation measures were investigated.
