Student testimonial: Claudia de Buck – MSc Bioinformatics and Biotechnology
Claudia started at Wageningen University in 2016, where she started her bachelor’s in Biotechnology. After obtaining her BSc degree, she continued with a double master’s program in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics in 2019. She loves to combine bioinformatics and biotechnology. Currently she is in her third year where she is applying her skills at Solynta, a potato breeding factory.
What I really liked during the programme was that you could really see the connection between bioinformatics and biotechnology.
Study choice
“During my BSc in Wageningen, I followed a course called Biosystems, where you already start to combine bioinformatics and lab work, which primed my interest in bioinformatics. I also had a few friends who were more interested in bioinformatics who told me to look at the MSc bioinformatics. Initially, I wanted to continue with the Biotechnology MSc, but then I heard I could also do both MSc programmes at the same time. During my minor, I also followed a number of courses related to bioinformatics which were really interesting. Also, during my BSc thesis, I had to send a DNA sample for sequencing, and a technician in the lab gave me the results, but I wanted to know how I could perform these types of analyses myself. So, I chose to pursue both MSc programmes.”
Programme
“I really liked Advanced Bioinformatics, this course links programming to the biological application. First, you learn some theory and then you do a project where you apply what you learned. What I really liked during the programme was that you could really see the connection between bioinformatics and biotechnology.”
Plans for the future
“I would like to continue combining bioinformatics with biotechnology. For example, first modeling a specific process and then going into the lab to test the hypothesis obtained from the model. Currently, I would love to pursue a Ph.D. as I am really interested in research, but I would also be interested in going into industry.”
