Alumni Sem Albers - Quality and Food Logistics
Sem Albers is an alumnus of Wageningen University, where he pursued a Bachelor's degree in Food Technology before moving on to the Master's program in Food Quality Management (MFQ). While contemplating his choice of Master's program, Sem desired to combine his interests in management and logistics with his passion for the food industry.
The Food Quality Management program offered me the opportunity to specialize in quality of food logistics, which perfectly aligned with my career aspirations
Current role:
Sem currently holds the position of Project Supply Planner at Jacobs Douwe Egberts, the world's largest pure playing coffee and tea company. Based at the company's headquarters in Utrecht, Netherlands, as part of the Central Planning department at JDE's headquarters in Utrecht, Sem is involved in supply planning. “My responsibilities involve analyzing market demands, optimizing production and distribution, and ensuring timely supply to meet customer needs.” Currently, he is actively involved in a project to support the new supply planning department in Warsaw, Poland.
I find great satisfaction in resolving urgent supply issues and maintaining high service levels.
Favourite aspect of the job:
He enjoys the challenge of ensuring that customers' demands are met, preventing out-of-stock situations, and contributing to the overall customer experience and the success of the company.
The program provided me with exposure to a diverse and multicultural environment, preparing me to work with colleagues and stakeholders from around the world.
Courses such as food logistics and food quality management research principles, equipped me with practical knowledge and real-life simulations that mirror the challenges faced in the industry.
Experience with the MFQ Program:
Sem attributes several valuable skills and experiences gained from the MFQ program that have contributed to his success in his current role. Firstly, the program provided him with exposure to a diverse and multicultural environment, preparing him to work with colleagues and stakeholders from around the world. Effective communication across different cultural backgrounds has become second nature to Sem, allowing him to thrive in the global landscape of his company. Additionally, courses such as food logistics and food quality management research principles, equipped him with practical knowledge and real-life simulations that mirror the challenges faced in the industry.
Internship and Thesis:
Sem's internship experience was a pivotal point in his journey. Amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, he applied to various companies and eventually secured an internship at Jacobs Douwe Egberts. This opportunity opened doors for him, as he excelled during his internship and was offered a permanent position within the company. His thesis focused on modeling and predicting donations from food banks using MATLAB. Although it was a proof-of-concept project with simulated data, it provided Sem with valuable experience in working with real-world scenarios.
Career Path:
Sem's journey at Jacobs Douwe Egberts started with his internship, which smoothly transitioned into a full-time job. His commitment and strong work ethic during his internship ultimately led to a full-time position at Jacobs Douwe Egberts. “In large multinational companies, hardworking individuals are often recognized and given opportunities for growth and development.” Being adaptable and embracing new challenges has been instrumental in shaping Sem's career path.
Challenges and Opportunities in the Food Quality Management Sector:
According to Sem, one of the main challenges in the sector is the sourcing of various materials, such as primary ingredients and packaging materials. Ensuring flexibility and maintaining quality standards while managing multiple suppliers can be demanding. Sem highlights the need for backup options and the ability to adapt to changes in the supply chain. “There is a trend of shortening supply chains, moving towards localized sourcing to mitigate risks associated with global disruptions.”
Advice to Aspiring Professionals:
“I would advice aspiring professionals in the food quality management field not to plan too far ahead. Instead, remain open to unforeseen opportunities that may arise along their journey.” While it is essential to have goals and aspirations, Sem believes that being flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances is equally crucial. By staying receptive to new experiences and being proactive in seizing opportunities, aspiring professionals can navigate their career.
