Social Dutch 1
Are you an international student at Wageningen University & Research and would you like to be able to speak Dutch with your fellow students and lecturers or hold a simple conversation with your neighbours? Would you also like to learn about Dutch customs and traditions, both within and outside the university? Then our Social Dutch courses are just the thing for you.
Target group
The course is geared towards bachelor’s and master’s students of Wageningen University & Research who do not speak Dutch and who are interested in learning the language for social purposes.
Course content
The main goal of this course is to learn to communicate in Dutch in simple, everyday situations.
What will this course teach you?
- to introduce yourself/someone else;
- tell someone where you are from;
- ask someone where they are from;
- spell your name, address and city;
- explain how you are doing and ask someone how they are doing;
- explain what you study and ask what someone else studies;
- talk about your hobbies;
- invite someone to do something;
- talk about what you like/don’t like;
- ask someone what they enjoy doing;
- talk about your family;
- describe someone’s personality and appearance;
- talk about your daily activities;
- ask for the time and tell someone the time;
- ask and explain what’s happening;
- make an appointment;
- hold a conversation in a shop;
- ask where something is and explain where people/things are;
- ask the price of a product.
Once you have completed the course, you will know:
- numbers up to 100;
- the days of the week;
- the months of the year.
Learning grammar is secondary to developing good communication skills and a good vocabulary. Only the basics of grammar will be covered, such as sentence structure, present tense verb conjugation, negation, question structure and pronouns. This course will also cover Dutch pronunciation and interesting aspects of Dutch culture.
The lecturer will speak Dutch as much as possible during the course.

Admission requirements
No prior knowledge of the Dutch language is required for Social Dutch 1. If you want to check whether this course is suitable for your level and your study goals, contact us at into@wur.nl.
Is your native language German? Then you have the opportunity to start with Social Dutch 2 on the condition that you study chapters 1 through 5 of the course manual before you start.

You follow the course entirely online using the Virtual Classroom in Brightspace or at our location: Forum, Wageningen Campus.
Number of meetings
15 meetings of 1.5 hours each.
Self-study
2 to 3 hours of self-study per week.

Certification
You will receive a certificate from Wageningen in’to Languages if you attended at least 80% of the lessons. After completing Social Dutch 1 you can register for Social Dutch 2.

* The courses Social Dutch 1 & 2 are part of the Free Social Dutch Courses for bachelor’s and master’s students of Wageningen University & Research. These are free for students who attend 80% of the classes (12 of the 15). If a student fails to meet this attendance requirement, they will receive a €90 invoice at the end of the course.
