Recently, WUR Library digitised a special collection of historical photographs on peat extraction in the Weerribben-Wieden. Now, you can view the photos in the WUR Image Collections.

Peatlands in the Weerribben-Wieden

The collection of 45 photos of the Weerribben-Wieden show how peat was still extracted in the 1950s in the Weerribben-Wieden in north-west Overijssel, as it had been done since the 17th century. The photos also give an impression of the land use by farmers and their living conditions in the wetland area. The photos were selected by Jan Neefjes of Bureau Overland.
