Course on Exposure Assessment of Plant Protection Products for Groundwater and Surface Water
Do you want to learn how to apply existing guidance and approaches in exposure assessment? In the authorization of plant protection products, the potential risks of active ingredients and products for the environment are assessed at EU and MS level using governmental guidance.
This course will be scheduled in 2024.
You can show your interest in the next edition.
This course is supported by CTGB
Why follow this course?
Get up to date with the latest developments in exposure in the top layer of the soil (PEARL soil exposure), optimization of parameters for non-equilibrium sorption (PEARLNEQ) and FOCUS surface water models (including TOXSWA).
After successful completion of this course, you will have gained new knowledge and approaches which you have practiced in hands-on assignments and which you can directly apply in your daily work, regarding leaching and aquatic exposure of plant protection products.
- 1 SETAC credit
Is this course for you?
This course aims at professionals using guidance for the authorization of plant protection products: regulators working for admission authorities who apply the guidance for their dossier evaluations; consultants and business representatives working for industry and/or consulting agencies who apply the guidance for dossiers (evaluation, preparation and submission); scientists performing modelling research, applying the latest and newest available guidance.
We ask at least a bachelor's degree or similar in natural sciences and experience with at least one of the exposure models.
Programme & topics
A hands-on training by the combination of lectures, exercises and discussions. After the course you can apply new knowledge and approaches straight away in your daily work. The content of the course focuses on leaching to groundwater and aquatic exposure, including emissions from greenhouses, of plant protection products. You will be able to apply the following models: PEARL, PEARLNEQ, GeoPEARL and FOCUS surface water models (including TOXSWA). Hands-on exercises include the determination of pesticide input parameters and interpretation of the results in relation to the applied input parameters and in relation to regulatory use.
The online training course on Exposure Assessment of plant protection products offers you an attractive mix of interactive live sessions and online self-study, supporting PDF’s and hands-on assignments. The following models are included in 4 modules:
- Module 1: Introduction
- Module 2: Leaching to groundwater: PEARL (including PEARL soil exposure) PEARLNEQ and GeoPEARL
- Module 3: Exposure in surface water: FOCUS_SWASH, FOCUS_MACRO, FOCUS_PRZM, FOCUS_TOXSWA
- Module 4: Greenhouse emissions: latest release from GEM (soil bound and soilless cultivation)
Update: Module 4 will be postponed until the latest version of GEM (4.4.3) will be released.
The substances tool SPIN is used in modules 2, 3 and 4. Participants of the course need to download these models beforehand: https://www.pesticidemodels.eu/home.
Hands-on exercises include the determination of pesticide input parameters and interpretation of the results in relation to the applied input parameters and in relation to regulatory use.
Before the course starts, we offer a support and test session on the 17th of February 2022, at 10.00 am, to test your connection and support you with downloading the required software. The first live session of the course has been scheduled on the 10th of March at 13.00 hr. All subsequent Thursday live sessions are scheduled to start at 9.00 am and all Tuesday Q&A sessions are scheduled to start at 10 am.
