Assessing environmental impact in crop residue-based bioenergy development:an integrated agent-based approach exploring social and technological complexity in the case of China
Summary
Bioenergy, a promising renewable resource, offers solutions to the growing global energy demand. Crop residue-based bioenergy (CRB) stands out because its abundant and sustainable feedstock. However, challenges of CRB development arise from policymakers' hesitations in the uncertainties of GHG reduction potential and its abatement costs, influenced by intricate policy, technological, and social dynamics. This research developed an integrated assessment framework to reveal the governance structure, influencing mechanism and stakeholder interactions. This framework was applied in the context of China's CRB industry to assess policy impacts on GHG reduction and abatement costs and to provide policy recommendations. Tailoring CRB development to local conditions (e.g., climate, government finance and governance capacities) is essential. Market-based instruments like a carbon trading system can support CRB growth and alleviate governmental pressures. This assessment framework's success could be applicable to other countries and waste recycling sectors amid growing interest in energy transition and CRB development.
