AlgaePARC: Strain selection and optimization of culture conditions of fast growing strains with high lipid content

Microalgae are considered a promising source for added-value products as well as biofuels. However, production costs are still limiting the development of commercial scale production systems. Maximization of productivity and minimization of photobioreactor costs and energy requirements is the only way to achieve a profitable production process.

Aim

The aim of this project is to optimize operational conditions for lipid enriched microalgae production in lab-scale photobioreactors, as well as in pilot systems outdoors (2.4m2). Screening of microalgae and the use of feedstocks are evaluated to make the production of biofuel feasible.

Approach

Biofuel production with microalgae requires the use of fast-growing strains with high lipid content. But also cultivation conditions have to be optimized in order to achieve an enhanced lipid productivity.
A selection of potential microalgae has been done based on available literature data. In a second stage, well plate experiments will allow for a fast screening based on growth and lipid content. New media using different feedstocks will also be developed and tested in order to reduce costs. Strains with a high lipid content and a high growth rate will be considered suitable for the next stage. Turbidostat experiments will be carried out to optimize the lipid content of the selected microalgae. Nitrogen limitation and/or depletion is chosen as the main factor improving lipid productivity. The selected strain will be grown under real outdoor conditions in the pilot scale photobioreactors for a proof of principle.
