Martijn Keur

For my HBO study Aquatic Ecotechnology at the Hogeschool Zeeland in Vlissingen, I did my graduation research at Wageningen Marine Research in Den Helder.

There, I researched the negative effects of environmentally friendly sunscreen products on the marine environment. After completing my bachelor's degree, I stayed on in Den Helder and joined the experimental research team.

In the beginning, I was mainly occupied with the practical implementation of projects in the field of ecotoxicology in the form of bioassays, mesocosm studies and ballast water research.

Given my broad interest in marine ecology, I have since become involved in a host of other topics and projects. For example, I contribute to migration studies of tagged bats and birds. These can be followed through a broad telemetry network along the entire Dutch coast and beyond. I help ensure that the network continues to function.

I am also involved in projects on zooplankton monitoring, where we now monitor the zooplankton quantities and diversity in the Wadden Sea on a monthly basis.

These are just a few examples of themes and projects I work on, there is much more! And I think that's what makes working at Wageningen Marine Research so much fun. Since it is such a broad institute, I also have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects, which makes my job very versatile. And I really enjoy doing practical work, which to me is the most important!
