Absorption and digestion
Wageningen Food Safety Research wants to develop a series of laboratory models that will reproduce the way our bodies absorb, digest and convert substances, and the effect they have on our bodies.
Estimating the toxicity of a substance
Each of these steps involves looking at how the substance behaves, studying how substances are converted and discovering where the substances end up in the cell. This enables us to make a good estimate of the toxicity of a substance.
Tissue on a chip
A lot is already known about many types of substances (hormones, toxins, nanoparticles). We are currently working on what has been dubbed a ‘tissue on a chip’, which allows us to reproduce processes in humans and animals.
