Integrating nature-based social-emotional approach to the primary school environmental education programme (curriculum) in Azerbaijan
My research aims to integrate a nature-based, social-emotional approach into the Environmental Education (EE) primary school curriculum in Azerbaijan to enhance holistic child development and promote environmental sustainability.
The study will evaluate the current EE programme’s effectiveness, investigate the Social-Emotional and Environmental Education Development (SEED) framework’s potential, and consider a nature-centric curriculum. The rationale for the study lies in an exploration of potential benefits and challenges that the integration of the SEED framework into the EE curriculum could offer towards fostering holistic child development and environmental preservation. The methodology includes a comprehensive review of the current curriculum and its impact through content analysis, a comparative analysis between the current programme and the SEED framework using an experiment design and pre-post interviews, and a proposed subsequent design of key elements for an EE programme using the SEED framework.
The research will employ a qualitative approach, utilising the Gioia methodology with thematic analysis of curriculum documentation, scholarly literature, and interview transcripts from teachers and pupils to develop a grounded theory. The study is cross-sectional and based on a social constructivist epistemology.
