Towards enacting and incorporating regenerative forms of nature-based learning into learning approaches in Business Schools: To support a transition to Regenerative Futures and Business Models
Ananda Wyss’ PhD research explores how regenerative forms of nature-based learning can be incorporated into learning approaches in Business schools to support a shift towards regenerative futures and business models.
The research stems from the notion that if we are to transition beyond incremental reduction of unsustainability, towards active ecological restoration and rejuvenation, enabling all forms of life to flourish. Then, we must address a growing disconnect between humans and nature more deeply, which shows itself in excessive consumption and over-exploitation of natural resources. In many ways, a paradigm shift is needed to move away from current, undermining business logic and practices. This presents an (un)learning challenge, in which business schools play a pivotal role. Business Schools can enhance students’ understanding of living systems, foster critical and systems thinking, and provide spaces where creative experimentation and collaboration can occur. However, existing business education has been slow to incorporate transdisciplinary perspectives, learning for, in, and with nature, and active collaboration with external actors, impacting current and future business practices. Therefore, this research explores the potential for nature-based learning in fostering regenerative-focused mindsets and capabilities in business education and creating the conditions for students and organizations to (re)connect with nature, others, and ourselves as nature.
Employing an Educational Design Research approach and drawing upon principles of Nature-based Education and Regenerative Higher Education, the research will investigate formats, content, and processes in existing literature and initiatives. Based upon this review, pilot projects for innovative nature-based learning approaches will be developed to experiment with and evaluate further insights. The findings are expected to enrich current literature and practice in education for sustainability.
