Project
Fostering Oral Presentation Competence in Higher Education
This research project focuses on the design of effective learning environments for developing oral presentation competence amongst students in higher education. Studies are initiated by Stan van Ginkel, in collaboration with colleague researchers and academic skills trainers, and are specifically aimed to construct and formulate essential educational design principles for encouraging this competence. Moreover, research questions address the goal to explore effective feedback processes within the context of presentation skills courses.
A systematic literature review was conducted with the aim of synthesizing data from previous studies in this field into a comprehensive set of design principles with underlying theoretical and empirical arguments for developing this competence in higher education. This study was published in Educational Research Review in February 2015. Other studies, building on this review, focus on effective feedback processes aimed to foster students’ presentation performances. The research project is supervised by Judith Gulikers, Harm Biemans and Martin Mulder.
About Stan van Ginkel
After completing the Master ‘Human Geography & Planning’ at the Utrecht University, Stan van Ginkel started in 2005 as a junior teacher at the faculty of Geosciences. From 2007 till 2012 he worked at the Institute of Education (formerly IVLOS) within the Faculty of Social Sciences at the same university. He provided academic skills courses and worked as a consultant on projects about curriculum development, with special interest in honours programs, within the field of higher education. In February 2012, he started his PhD project 'Academic Skills Training' at the Chair Group Education and Competence Studies, Wageningen University.
