Source to Seas - Zero Pollution 2030
This project is in line with the objectives as formulated under mission C4: Improve water quality and mission E1: Sustainable and safe North Sea and other waters. The project contributes to preventing pollution of seawater.
The aim of this project is to reduce pollution of European seas from human activities to 0 by 2030. The project addresses shortcomings in current approaches to prevent pollution. Focus is on best-practices, human behaviour, socio-economic factors and governance supported by knowledge and understanding of current barriers to effective and efficient prevention, reduction, mitigation and monitoring of marine pollution. The pollutants that the project focuses on are microplastics, and specifically PFAS and particles generated by abrasion of car tyres.
Specific actions are:
- Gain better understanding of barriers to successful marine pollution control and develop interventions focusing on human behaviour, socio-economic factors and governance.
- Taking advantage of best practices in implementing sustainable and effective marine pollution measures
- Involving stakeholders through a joint knowledge production process
- Drawing up practical guidelines for preventing pollution from consumer products, transferable between geographical regions and types of pollutants
- Developing (together with stakeholders) a roadmap towards a clean Europe by 2030
- Generating societal impact and awareness on tackling marine pollution through various communication activities.
